Bethann's House Fire

In our neighborhood, we often joke that people move in and no one leaves until they pass away. We are like the gas lamp district; our kids ride their bikes in the street while neighbors sit together on the curbs, enjoying each other's company and watch days turn into nights. We lend each other sugar, offer to help whenever we can, celebrate special occasions and support one another when life's circumstances happen. One of our favorite neighbors, Bethann, was the woman with all the pups for the children to play with, chickens to feed and would give the shirt off her back to help someone else.

On Thursday, March 1st, many people couldn't believe it was already 3 months into 2018 and our street was quiet. Around 5:30 PM, that all changed. We could smell the smoke, and suddenly, we could see it. We knew our dear friend and neighbor had her several dogs inside, but we couldn't find a safe way in. Our sweet Bethann arrived home from work only to see her home up in flames, 7 fire trucks, 4 battalions, 2 police cars, countless neighbors lining the street, and the fear of her dogs trapped inside. After several hours, ensuring the fire was contained, she lost her home and 5 of her 8 dogs. 

As a neighborhood, or as Bethann calls us "the hood", we could not do enough to comfort her and be sure she was surrounded with love. She now has to rebuild her home and mourn the loss of her loved ones. The costs are escalating quickly, and every little bit counts.
