Beth & Andy Schwartz House Fire After Hurricane

Donation protected

My mother Beth and step-father Andy Schwartz were displaced from their home at 51 Dunes Lane after their apartment building caught fire due to a power outage after a recent storm on Long Island. Like many others in the community, they've been suffering economic hardship due to Covid-19.

My mother is a type-1 diabetic and has ketoacidosis that has hospitalized her numerous times over the past couple of years. My step-father has heart and other health issues as well and both are currently unable to work due to their health issues and Covid-19 restrictions.

They were forced to relocate to a hotel after the storm knocked out power to around 110,000 homes on Long Island. During the power outage sweltering temperatures made it unsafe for them to stay there. A hotel stay was an added financial hardship for them, but one they were prepared to endure for a few days until power was restored.

The hotel they were staying at had a no-pets policy, so my step-father Andy would periodically go back to the apartment to feed their cat Sedona. This was the pattern for as many days as the power was out.

The power outage on Long Island lasted for roughly a week. When it was finally restored, my parents returned to their home only to find the Long Island Fire Department had closed down the street. Their apartment, furniture and all their worldly possessions accumulated over a lifetime where consumed in the flames.

My parents are devasted by the loss of not only their possessions but their pet cat Sedona, who was lost in the fire. It's a tough time for them right now. They were responsible renters and had rental insurance - but that only covers so much and isn't the same as home insurance at all.

With no other family close by they can stay with, they've been forced to stay in a hotel. I feel terrible that I can't help them more right now but I live in California and have 6 children and economic hardships of my own.

Everyone has been suffering and I know times are hard for alot of people right now. Any donation you can make would be generous. They are wonderful people and need our help. I know they are part of a strong community though that I'm praying will rally around them during this time to help them financially recover.
