It is with great hope and sadness that we begin to tell you the story of our beloved, Austraberta “Berta” Francisco. Berta is terminally ill with stage three pancreatic and kidney cancer. She is currently working at Chuy’s Arbor Trails, our restaurant in Austin, TX, to this day.
Unfortunately, this is not her first battle with cancer. She beat it the first time with radiation treatment and intensive surgery. After fighting for over a year, Berta returned to us in 2017. Early this year (2018) we found out that the cancer had returned and was much worse this time. Berta has been given a few months to live, but after some recent disappointing doctor’s appointments, we no longer know the accuracy of that diagnosis.
While there are treatment options with extremely bleak chances of recovery, it is with strength and logic that Berta would like to focus on the future of her three children. She is a single mother to her two sons, ages 14 and 16, and her eight year-old daughter.
Although Berta has worked tirelessly and happily at our restaurant for 18 years, providing for her family, she still has many concerns for the future of her kids. The boys will stay in the United States to continue their education and Berta is searching for a place for them to be happy, comfortable, and support their basic needs. Berta wishes to deliver her daughter to her mother and sister in Mexico. This is also where Berta will live out the rest of her days. She has other financial concerns not related to her children, for example, a small car she needs to pay off, a lease, bills, medical equipment, medicine etc.,
We love Berta more than words can begin to describe and we want to respect her wishes, as much as possible. She doesn’t want anyone to know she’s sick, but she did agree to let us post this, as time is of the essence and the need is dire.
We have set a goal of $50,000, not only to make Berta comfortable and close out her life with dignity, but to ensure a mother that her young children will be well cared for after she is gone. Imagine that feeling. We want to allow her that peace. This horrible disease has created many tragic situations, but if you give today you can truly make a difference in this one. Please keep that in mind when you give today. Also, remember that ANY AMOUNT helps Berta and her children. This money will go directly into Berta’s account and help her immediately. She is still working at our store, almost daily as she desperately needs the finances to support her plan.
