Our students need your help!
Each year we have more students who apply for our scholarship, and we don’t have all the funding needed to help these students. This year our goal is to raise $140,000 for 70 students. If we can raise enough funds, each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship for college or vocation training. Please help us reach this goal.
In 2018, The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program (BSAP) was rated as one of the Top 15 Best Scholarships in Maryland. We are a small 24-year-old nonprofit that gives scholarships to low-income who live in subsidized housing in Montgomery County, Maryland. We are unique in serving this specific under-privileged population, and we allow multi-year funds to be used for child care, transportation and fees as well as for tuition and books, which is much needed and typically not available from other scholarships or grants. More than 80% of donations are given to these students.
Award recipients are inspiring, hard-working (often employed while taking classes) and committed to education in order to move toward self-sufficiency for their family and future generations. Some of our graduates have become doctors, teachers, and nurses. Without this help, it would have been hard for them to graduate.

More Details about BSAP: We are a component fund of the Greater Washington Community Foundation, funded by tax-deductible contributions and administered by a working volunteer Board of Directors. Since 1995, 600 scholarships, including 76 awardees in 2019, totalling $701,000 have been awarded. The program began in 1995 when Bernard Tetreault retired as Executive Director of our county’s public housing agency.
