My name is Berenice Rosales; I am a single mom of four beautiful angels. Our life has had its challenges from the start. I moved to the United States from Mexico 15 years ago with my two oldest children, Dan and Carmen, working hard in pursuit of happiness and success. As time passed I had two more children, Vianey and Rafael (Rafi).
When Rafi was six months old in 2008 he was the victim and survivor of shaken baby. In one of our darkest times, I decided to be the advocate for Rafael’s medical progress. The doctor told me he would be a vegetable for the rest of his life and I did not accept that.
When Rafi’s Dad, my ex-partner was sentenced to prison, I had to take on multiple jobs in order to keep up the expenses of the household. It was not easy to raise all four of my angels in the conditions we faced, but my biggest success as a mother was making sure that my son Rafi had a fighting chance to having a happy and secure life.
I’ve dedicated the last 9 years of my time to my family, running to doctors, school appointments, and always advocating for my kids. I also advocate for other families with kids with special needs, educating them about resources available to them and making sure they are taken care of. I knew that a traditional job would not allow me the time and flexibility for my kids so I decided to start my own company as an interpreter.
Being self-employed has its pros and cons and one of the cons was my health. It is something that I overlooked because I was focused on raising my angels and advocating for Rafi and others. I started noticing something was wrong with me but I didn’t take the time or have the finances to go to doctors. Since, at this point, I am classified a permanent legal resident, I do not qualify for government aid.
In July I had a mammogram and the doctors quickly had me come back for an ultrasound and biopsy. They diagnosed me with stage III breast cancer. The next two months were a blur of activity as I prepared myself for surgery and worked to create safeguards for my angels.
My surgery was on September 6th and they performed a double mastectomy and removed some of my lymph nodes. For the next month I will be recovering from the surgery. I will be on 24 hour bed rest with limited mobility.
The next year in this new chapter of my life will be the most difficult time for my family do to the lack of financial support. I will be going through radiation and chemo therapy, unable to work and provide for my family.
Dan, my oldest son has started his own life and with the very limited resources he has, he will give me a hand with as much as he can. I am the kind of woman that does not like to ask for help because I don’t want to show weakness or that I am not capable of taking care of my family, like I have for the past 23 years.
If life has taught me anything it is that we have to take care of our health both physically and mentally so we can take care of others, and when people are in need, even a cheer can change the outcome of the situation. So this is why I ask for your help. I never in my life thought that my health would be in jeopardy and be the reason why I can’t help my family.
My angels and I greatly appreciate any support you can provide during this time of recovery for me.
I promise that I will continue to pay it forward wherever and whenever I am able during and after my recovery.

Cuando el padre de Rafi, mi ex pareja fue sentenciado a prisión, tuve que asumir múltiples trabajos para mantener los gastos de la casa. No fue fácil criar a mis cuatro ángeles en las condiciones que enfrentamos, pero mi mayor éxito como madre fue asegurarme de que mi hijo Rafi tuviera la oportunidad de tener una vida feliz y segura.
Dediqué los últimos 9 años de mi tiempo a mi familia, acudiendo a médicos, a citas con la escuela y siempre abogando por mis hijos. También he abogado por otras familias con niños con necesidades especiales, educándolos sobre los recursos disponibles para ellos y asegurándome de que sean atendidos. Sabía que un trabajo tradicional no me daría el tiempo y la flexibilidad para mis hijos, así que decidí comenzar mi propia compañía como intérprete.
Ser trabajador por cuenta propia tiene sus pros y sus contras y uno de los inconvenientes fue mi salud. Es algo que pasé por alto porque estaba concentrada en criar a mis ángeles y defender a Rafi y otros. Comencé a darme cuenta de que algo andaba mal, pero no me tomé el tiempo ni tuve las finanzas para ver a un médico. Dado que, en este momento, estoy clasificado como residente legal permanente, no califico para recibir ayuda del gobierno.
En julio me hice una mamografía y los médicos rápidamente me hicieron regresar para una ecografía y una biopsia. Me diagnosticaron cáncer de mama en estapa 3. Los siguientes dos meses fueron muy confusos mientras me preparaba para la cirugía y la seguridad de mis ángeles.
Mi cirugía fue el 6 de septiembre y realizaron una mastectomía doble y extirparon algunos ganglios linfáticos. Para el próximo mes me recuperaré de la cirugía. Estaré en reposo de 24 horas con movilidad limitada.
El próximo año en este nuevo capítulo de mi vida será el momento más difícil para mi familia debido a la falta de apoyo financiero. Voy a someterme a la terapia de radiación y quimioterapia, sin poder trabajar y mantener a mi familia.
