Bernard's Amputation Needs Fund

“I had my foot my whole life. It served me well. But it was time for it to go.”

Bernard “The Ploughman” Recker still has a great attitude after many serious complications fighting diabetes. On May 14th, 2017, he experienced his latest amputation: his leg was removed just below the knee. This leaves him with only the heel of one foot. He will now be going home in a wheelchair.

This proud man, who has worked harder than anyone I know, will never be ploughing behind horses again, driving his truck or walking the fields. He, however, continues to wear his uniform plaid shirts and farm overalls in his hospital bed. He is ready to go home.

For years, he has called a little house in the south end of Peterborough home. He will never be driving out to the farm to check the cows or horses in the barn again. And he says that’s okay, he just needs to get home. He is determined.

Did I mention he’s proud? It would kill him to ask, but he really needs our help to get home.

The hard work he has done in his life never offered such things as health insurance, pensions or sick days. If he wasn’t working, he wasn’t getting paid. Even after selling the few things he owns, it’s not enough to get him home.

The medical equipment needed right now is very expensive and completely necessary for him to try to live some semblance of a normal life.

In addition to this, the house he calls home is not wheelchair accessible. And in the midst of a very expensive attempt to make it such, we have had to face the reality that it is just not feasible. This means he and my mother have to move. Unfortunately there is not one wheelchair accessible apartment available in Peterborough at this time! So Bernard is on many long waiting lists.

He is ready to be released from the hospital right now (and they can’t keep him there forever), so Bernard will be going into respite care to recover properly rather than home. Respite care is also expensive.

I have set up a GoFundMe Campaign to raise the minimum $32,000 he needs to cover his immediate medical equipment, respite care, and long term housing needs.

Please give what you can! And SHARE, REPOST, FORWARD and SPREAD this to anyone and everyone you can think of who can help!

Bernard has never been famous, an eloquent speaker, singer, musician or politician. But he is our Dad. He needs all of our help to get him home. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for any assistance. It is greatly appreciated by the family.

With much gratitude, Mary Helen (Bernard’s daughter)
