On Thursday, May 2nd, 2019, while taking measurements on the roof of our home, my father fell victim to a freak accident where a sudden gust of wind caused a sheet of galvanize to slam into his chest, knocking him off balance and causing him to plummet off the roof. He fell directly onto his back, sustaining neck fractures of the C5-C6, and Grade 1 retrolisthesis at C6-C7.

He was admitted to the hospital on May 2nd, but was discharged on May 5th, due to an infection on the ward which the hospital staff were trying to contain.

My father's symptoms have since deteriorated to the point where he has lost motor skills and strength in his hands and legs. At the moment, he is unable to walk, stand, sit up, or make a fist to be able to hold things. These seem to indicate that his injury is progressing and there may be some nerve damage.

In order to examine the extent of this nerve damage, he will need to do an MRI, and have a consultation with a neurologist. These services are not available in my country. As such, he will need to be taken via an air ambulance to the nearby island of Martinique, where these medical services can be provided. He may also need surgery and will surely need physical therapy to aid his rehabilitation.

My father is a former national basketballer, who has played for Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. He attended and played for Iona from 1973 through 1976, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics & Computer Science. After graduating from Iona, he played semi-professional basketball in a Summer League Programme in Philadelphia for about three years.

My dad was on our roof because he was trying to repair damages caused by Hurricane Maria in September of 2017. It's been a slow and costly process, but he was trying to get it done, to make sure his family would be safe for the upcoming hurricane season, which starts June 1.  Anyone you would meet would tell you that my dad is a very generous, intelligent, and genuine person.

I am humbly and urgently seeking financial support for his medical attention. Our family sincerely appreciates any level of support.
