Bermuda Overseas Mission to India

Our Story

Hello!

We are Leslie, Murray and Brandon Scott, children's reading advocates and budding humanitarians.  We have been given a chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in need and their families and to fulfill a lifelong dream by being a part of 2018 Bermuda Overseas Mission’s (BOM's) Habitat for Humanity build in Bangalore, India. Spanning more than two weeks, the trip will focus on three projects:

1)    building homes for families in need;

2)   building a full Reading Culture bookshelf in a local school.

3)  donating toys, clothes and books (perhaps enough to build a second bookshelf!) to a community orphanage.

 This year, BOM's Habitat for Humanity is in full support of  the charitable initiative, Reading Culture, recently started by Kristen and Issa Ndiaye, which focuses on constructing not only multicultural bookshelves within homes and communities, but also providing the enrichment workshops needed to bring them to life.

While BOM’s vision is to build homes in developing countries, Reading Culture’s is to assist those developing countries by contributing to their reading culture, their local book industry and world of work, and spark enthusiasm for reading and learning in teachers, students, and anyone watching. (Read more about their most recent project in Dakar, Senegal by visiting www.readingcultr.wordpress.com.)

 This trip will be a life changing experience.  The construction of homes will be labour intensive, but we are willing to put in the hours to give these families a place to live and to provide their children with books to open their minds and broaden their horizons.

Why Gofundme?

 We are very excited about an opportunity like this because we feel that it is our turn to give back. We're choosing to gofundme because we want our community to be involved in what we're doing; it gives them the opportunity to contribute to the project, not to mention, holds us accountable! We know it won't be easy.

Your Impact

 We are raising funds in a variety of ways and gofundme is one that will help us reach so many.  Any contribution that you make will help us achieve our goal of reaching Bangalore to build homes for families in need, build a bookshelf with a full set of multicultural focused books for local school children, and give toys and clothes to those who have none.

The total of $7,000  that we hope to earn will pay for:

A bookshelf commissioned to and built by a local carpenter;
A full set of books to fill the shelf  for the school (English is a main language over there, so we will be buying beautifully illustrated multicultural English books from Canada and the US, Bermuda and India;
Toys, clothes and more books for the orphanage (and if we can, we would love to provide them with a smaller bookshelf, as well);
Shipping costs.

Our Deadline

 We're set to leave for Bangalore in early July but would love to have the majority of items in hand by May 2018!  $30 can buy educational supplies, $20 can buy a hardcover (which will last longer) book to put on the shelf or an article of clothing, $10 can buy a toy or paperback but you can also help in the following ways:

1) Spreading the word! Use this link to share on social media and email: (gofundme link here)

2) If you would like to send toys or multicultural books to donate, send a private message for an address in Bermuda, Canada or the US. That works too!

Thank you so much for all of your support. Check back often as we will keep you updated on our progress. We would not be able to complete this project without it!!!
