Emergency Funds

So. This is really hard for me to do and I have tried every avenue I can think of in order to possibly avoid this last ditch effort. 

My mother moved in with me about six weeks ago and since then money has been excruciatingly tight. We were making it and then about a week ago I got blindsided by a few things, one of which through the advice of friends I was able to clear up. However, there are still two major bills looming over my head. Apparently, my ex never paid the water bill for the old place and I did not receive the notice. I'm not in contact with him and received a letter from a lawyer demanding a payment of $250 for it. I don't have it. Because of money being tight I have been here since November and have YET to be able to afford to register my car in Maine. This means it is still registered in CT...where there is property tax on your vehicle...twice a year; I received that bill in the mail for $500. This means I am sitting on $750 in bills I have no way to pay that legal action can be taken against me for. They can put a lien on my car and without my car I can't get to work, putting me in an even worse situation. I still have to register my car in Maine and I am not sure how much it will cost.

I know it is a lot to ask, but if there is anything at all that you can do to help I will be forever grateful! Times are ridiculously tough for everyone, I know. I am trying desperately to find a new, better paying job so I can support my mother and myself. I can't afford to lose my car.
