When Ben turned 23, he came out to his parents, friends, and community as transgender. Shortly after, he started hormone therapy. He has been on hormones for a year now, and it's time for the next step in his incredible journey: Top surgery, or the removal of breast tissue to form a masculine chest. This is an important part of many transgender men's journeys to become their authentic selves. The binders he used to flatten chests have caused damage to ribs and lungs, such as bruising, inflammation, and fluid buildup.
