Ben’s Battle with GBS

Benjamin Kotchish was a fit, healthy 31 year old father to McKenzie (8 months) and husband to Rachel until 12/11/19. He woke up and couldn't feel his arms or legs. He was in and out of the ER all weekend with multiple tests ran. On 12/16/19 he was admitted to the ER and neurology department when he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system-the network of nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord. "GBS" symptoms can range from mild weakness to nearly devasting paralysis, leaving the person unable to breathe independently. Fortunately, most people eventually recover from even the most severe cases of GBS. After recovery, some people will have some degree of weakness. Since the body's own immune system does the damage, GBS is called an autoimmune disease. 


    Ben is currently in the ICU with a feeding tube and has a breathing tube inserted in order to assist his respiratory functions. He has received plasma infusions and is currently receiving IVIG treatment. He has endured a lot of pain, but remains in good spirits, surrounded by family and friends. Doctors are certain he will make a full recovery....they just don't know when. 


    Ben has always had such a bright light, fun spirit, and is a loving father, husband, brother, son and friend. He is loved by everyone who meets him and has rarely met a stranger. Many friends, family, and co-workers have asked how they can help, so we have created this page for those who feel led to give. This will help offset the medical expenses, time off work, adjustments needed to the house to accommodate recovery, etc. We want to help Ben and his family not to worry as they move through this difficult time and help keep his mind on recovery! We are SO grateful for every encouraging call and prayer, meals and treats, and help with the little one. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
