Benji’s Gender Confirmation Surgery

I met Benji several years ago at the beginning of his transition and we reconnected two years ago through our work at Starbucks. While we only got married in December 2017, I have been with Benji through his journey of the past two years that included surgery last year. Without a doubt Benji is one of the strongest people I’ve been lucky to know and has never become jaded or disheartened by the struggles he has faced. Being transgender in America today is not always easy, with the recent exposure on transgender rights, but Benji is one of the kindest, funniest and most giving people you could hope to meet.
Benji began transitioning in 2012 of September, 6 years ago and is ready to take the final surgical steps toward his transition goals. With two surgeries done, Benji will be receiving what is commonly know as bottom surgery or gender confirmation surgery under the care of the Transgender Center at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. This is both the best and closest option for Benji to receive the care he needs but presents many financial obstacles despite the surgery being partially covered by his insurance.As a requirement of the surgery Benji and I will have to live in New York for a full month post operation in order to have regular and nearly constant monitoring by doctors and nurses. This is a major surgery that will require several months of missed work for recovery time in addition to the month we spend living in New York.
Specifically we are fundraising to help provide funds for traveling to and from New York, living in New York, transportation for visits to and from Mount Sinai, food, medical necessities and lost income while recovering as well as my month of lost income living in New York.I will be updating regularly, October 5th we have a consultation with the surgeon to set a surgery date possibly for January or February if scheduling allows and I will be able to update with further information as we receive it!
