Benita's Bone Marrow Transplant

Donation protected
Benita Duncan was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) in 2014; this is a type of cancer that occurs when the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow are damaged. This condition will eventually lead to acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In the hopes of preventing a rapid decline in health, Benita started chemotherapy in February 2017. After seven months of intense treatment, her doctors have deemed chemotherapy as unsuccessful

Although she currently has medical insurance through Kaiser Permanente, we are beginning to discover the magnitude of financial burden this event will cause.

Lost work wages, medical bills,  transportation, and the apartment required near Stanford Hospital post-transplant are the main monetary necessities.

This apartment will be required for three months after her Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). Benita will essentially have an immune system starting at 0%; hence, her apartment must be clean and isolated from germs, viruses, etc. With the help of Emily (her daughter) as the "caregiver", all meals will have to be cooked in the apartment. Benita must move close to Stanford Hospital for regular check-ups every week (min. 4 visits/week) and for in the case of an emergency.

The doctors would like to proceed as soon as possible, so we are hoping to raise $20,000 within a few months. With your help, Benita will be able to afford an apartment that is expected to cost $200 a day. Benita will obviously not be able to work (as a court-reporter) during this time, and her 23-year-old daughter will be moving into the apartment to be with her full-time.

If you know my mom, Benita, I'm sure that you understand and agree that she is truly the most selfless, kind, and generous woman. She has continuously put the needs of her loved ones and daughter before herself. She actually discovered her condition after altruistically attempting to donate blood.

Benita and her family agree that all support will make a difference during this time. We hope that this fundraiser will help ease a stressful burden during her Bone Marrow Transplant. We truly have the utmost faith in Benita, her doctors, her donor, and all future treatment.

Benita is grateful and appreciative of all of your love and assistance. Please feel free to share this post.
