Benevolence for Brinkley

As all of you know, Brinkley is Chelsey's everything. She loves Brinkley more than anything in the world! Over the summer, Chelsey noticed that Brinkley had some weakness in one of her back legs. She took her to the vet and they diagnosed Brinkley with degenerative myelopathy. Unfortunately, degenerative myelopathy (or DM) is not uncommon in boxers. DM is an incurable, progressive disease of the spinal cord which results in failure of communication of the nerves of the limbs and the brain. It almost always begins in the back legs and will eventually progress to the front legs. As devastating as this diagnosis was for Chelsey and Brinkley, Chelsey immediately started physical therapy with Brinkley to strengthen her muscles to slow the progression down. The veterinarians at Oklahoma State are recommending a MRI of Brinkley's spinal cord to determine if the DM might be due to a tumor in the spinal cord, that could possibly be treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The MRI costs $2000 and will give us valuable information about Brinkley's condition and may result in something that can be treated, or at least help slow the progression down. Also, as Brinkley's condition progresses, she will eventually need a wheelchair, which costs $1000. Brinkley is 8 years young and full of energy and love, and we all want to keep Brinkley happy and healthy for as long as possible.
