Named to Colorado Preservation Inc.'s "Most Endangered Places" list in 2016.
Built in 1875 by Henry Teller and now part of the City of Central's National Historic Landmark District, the Belvidere Theater stands in a prominent location as you enter the City from I-70. When it opened, the theater had seating for 450, but it was a victim of its own success. A new, larger theater was needed, leading to the construction of the Central City Opera House. The Bel was then used for various other activities, including Beaman's Central Bottling Works, Colorado National Guard Armory Hall, and a school gym. In the 2000s, the property quietly slipped into disarray until Gilpin County acquired the building in 2015 for back property tax.
Today the City of Central and Gilpin County are committed to the redevelopment of this historic site, but they cannot do it alone. Let us build a place for the community to come back too - - help us save the Belvidere!
With your help, the Belvidere will be a vibrant community space once again. Ideas range from new theater productions, partnerships with the Opera, event center for weddings, graduations, or other parties, dinner theater, artist gallery, shops, or artist housing. No work has started yet, but the structural assessment has been completed to give everyone an idea of the structural need and cost to bring it back to its old glory.
Funds received will be leveraged to maximize every dollar ensuring the success of the theater.
