BELLESONGS -Belle Turnbull Song Cycle Project

"Ladies, keep your strangeness" This is an excerpt from one of my favorite poems by Belle Turnbull; a female poet, blazing the western trail during the early 1900's in Colorado. Her story is unique as well as our project.
My name is Kara Bishop Grover, and I am a graduate student at Florida State University pursuing a master degree in voice performance. Throughout my time as a professional singer, entrepreneur, and student, I have discovered my deep passion for promoting the valuable contributions of women in the arts. Their works are hugely underrepresented in the realm of music and literature. We need your help to illuminate their work and elevate their stories. Through that lens, I would like to share with you my project: BELLESONGS - Song Cycle for High Voice & Piano, composed By Lois Henry & Poetry by Belle Turnbull. My Colorado roots, love for nature, and passion for empowering women have all been my inspiration for this project. After discovering the works of Belle Turnbull, I knew that her literary contribution needs to be realized and ignite deserving appreciation. How? Through the application of music.
Lois Henry has done a magnificent job at setting 5 of Turnbull's poems; Mountain Mad, Observations above Timberline, Mountain Woman, Songs for Female Voices, and Answers to a Questionnaire. Henry has also added an overture vocalist titled Belleview to introduce the song cycle. The music honors Turnbull's text with flowing melodies, relatable yet quirky harmonic structure, and contains the unique "Henry" sound that everyone craves.
Our premiere of BELLESONGS will be the finale of my Master recital on March 18th 2021 to accompany an entire program of music by women. Our goal is Female Empowerment; poetry, music, performance, and production ALL by WOMEN! Together we will create a platform where their voices can be heard and celebrated. I need your help to fund the initial costs of our project. Lois and I have taken a leap of faith and have already started our research and development and production of the project.
It has taken a whole year to develop and compose, and the $4000 will begin to cover the costs it took to create this amazing musical work. Please join me in creating a brand new musical endeavor that will echo the voices of women past and future and honor specifically the work of female comolorado LGBT poet, Belle Turnbull.
