Bellas "Im Not Dead Yet" World Tour

First, let me discuss Bella for a minute.  Poor Bella was adopted by me when I was a senior in college.  Even she knew that was a bad idea.  She adapted by giving us evil side eye when we were being too loud, chewing ALL of my roomate's stuff (but not mine, so we're good), stopping in the middle of the street during walks, sitting straight up like a human, and preferring Greg over me (even though I was the one feeding the lil ungrateful brat.)

She's truly one of the best dogs in the world - sweet, funny, moody, great off leash, loves babies and elderly alike. Even people who don't like dogs like her because she's SO low maintenance.  Evelyn recognizes her awesomeness - I often find her quietly sitting with Bella on her dog bed.

If I could clone this dog, I would. In a heartbeat.

The wildly amazing Bella Cannoli has busted both her knees.  Her right ACL is fully torn.  She's been hobbling around on the other leg, even though that has a partial/near full tear as well.  How did she do this you ask?  Well, its pretty common as dogs get older that their knees begin to degenate.  That added with the fact that she keeps our yard squirrel-free, was likely the way they went down.

So! What did we do?  Well - we talked to the vet, who recommended talking to a surgeon and someone who could create a brace for her.  We decided to go with the brace.  It was a cheaper option and was managable for the rest of her life.  This was when it was just the left knee though... then she busted the right knee too.

We spoke with the surgeon, but expressed our concern about her weight loss.  We didn't think it would be ok to put her through the surgery just to find out something else was going on. We ran tests to make sure nothing else is going on behind the scenes and everything came back great!!  Girlfriend is as healthy as an ox on the inside.

And now, since we know she's healthy otherwise, we've decided to go ahead with the surgery.  We want the rest of her life to be comfortable and mobile.  What quality of life is there if she cant run and play?  She's not dead yet!!

Her surgery is scheduled for August 3rd.  We've been given an estimate of $2,300-$2,800, to be paid the day of.  Does this make knots in my stomach?  ABSOLUTELY.  Both Greg and I decided long ago that we would not intervene if our dogs became ill - just make them comfortable instead.  But this is an injury and certainly affects her day to day.  We don't think it would be fair to let Bella (aka The Best Dog Eva) live like this for the next 4-6 years if we can do something about it.  Unfortunately, this is a hefty sum for us to take on alone - and we're hoping fellow dog lovers understand.
