Just over a year ago, Bellamy Atwood was a 13 yr old middle school student and avid volleyball player. Now she is also a cancer survivor.
Bellamy not only played volleyball for her school, she also played on a club team at some of the biggest tournaments in the country. It was at one of these tournaments that Bellamy fractured the middle finger on her right hand during a match. The fracture healed, but it continued to hurt and the swelling got bigger. She was finally referred to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. It was there the doctors discovered it wasn't swelling, but a tumor. During the surgery to remove the tumor, it tested positive as malignant. Testing revealed it was a type of cancer called clear-cell sarcoma. Very rare and very aggressive. After many scans and many tests, they were told there was only 1 option to treat the cancer to keep it from spreading- an amputation of her entire middle finger on her right hand. And yes, she's right handed. The surgery was performed one week before she started her freshman year of high school. The surgery was successful and for now the cancer hasn't spread. She is scheduled go every couple of months to Jacksonville for scans and tests, monitoring her system for any signs the cancer has reappeared.
To say Bellamy is a strong young lady is an understatement. She has never once let her any of this stop her or slow her down. She started her freshman year of high school just like everyone else. She adjusted to writing with her "new" hand, she joined clubs, but she has had to take a step away from volleyball. It’s a new life for her now, but one she is ready to take on.
Unfortunately, Bellamy's mom, Susan, is a divorced parent with another teenage daughter, Bellamy's sister Delaney, at home. The financial burden from the surgeries and tests, as well as the numerous trips and overnight stays in Jacksonville has become overwhelming. Raising two teenage daughters isn't easy in the best of situations, and this isn't close to a best situation. Anything you can contribute to help would be a blessing for them. Especially with the holidays around the corner. Thank you and bless you for any help you can give.
