Indeed, in the aftermath of the August 4th explosion which killed more than 180 Lebanese, injured 6,500 inhabitants and destroyed the houses of 300,000 Beirut residents, it seemed to be obvious we had to act.
This disaster highlighted the inability of the Lebanese government to meet the needs of its population already on the brink of collapse. Indeed, it comes within the context of a major economic crisis that has pushed more than half of the Lebanese below the poverty threshold in only a few months. These events are however only the tip of the iceberg. They are the consequences of much deeper structural dysfunctions, and of the disastrous management of a country essentially based on the corruption and opportunism of its leaders. Once again, the Lebanese population needs more than ever two things: financial support and messengers from all over the world.
The Beirut Beitna project was born to support the citizen initiatives that are in full swing in the capital, fighting every day to rebuild another Lebanon. By telling you about the Beirut we have known, we would like to raise funds to support these initiatives. In order to do so, we are selling photo prints and postcards stemming from our shared memories and the journalistic work from three of us.
We created this fundraising for anyone that would like to support the Lebanese people, but that is not particularly interested in buying photo prints.
All donations and benefits from the photo sale will go directly to local NGOs or families in need, ensuring:
- No donation via the Government
- Provide help to people in need, without taking into account any clan, political or religious affiliation
- Work in close collaboration with local NGOs, that are fully trustworthy, to understand the rapidly changing needs and donate with impact
For more information, please visit our website (soon online), from which you will be able to order the photos.
