Beekeeping Club for High School Students !!

Donation protected
Buncombe County Early College is a public high school, located in Asheville, North Carolina.  A main mission of BCEC is to help students not only earn a high school diploma, but to also earn an associates degree in a unique partnership with  Asheville-Buncombe Technical College, our area's local community college.

BCEC  strives to give our students purposeful and meaningful real world experiences.  To this end, two of our teachers, who happen to be backyard beekeepers, recently created the first ever beekeeping club for high school students in our area!! We need your help! We are calling all beekeepers, all friends of bees,  and anyone who sees the value in passing on the art and science of beekeeping! Bees help feed the world , but unfortunately bees have been at risk and in population decline for many years for many reasons!

Why did we start a beekeeping club for high school students?
1. The average beekeeper is in their mid 50s, we need younger people to be interested in beekeeping!
2.  Science: there is so much biology and ecology our students can learn through beekeeping.
3. Business skills : We hope to one day sell our honey and other bee products.
4. Scholarship: In years to come, we hope to establish a honey bee scholarship  for students to continue their educational goals.
5. Charity: We would like to donate some honey to charitable nonprofit organizations that help people in food crisis.

What do we need to start our beekeeping adventure?

1.  Bees - we would like to start with 2 hives. - estimated cost - 300.00

2. Safety equipment - we need our students to be safe, if you are a beekeeper, you will get stung eventually, but we  need safety gear to minimize any stings! We need bee veils, bee jackets, and gloves. We would like enough bee suits for 8 students. - estimated cost - 800.00

3. Hive bodies, supers, frames, inner and outer covers. - The bees need a home, and a place to make honey - estimated cost - 600.00 for two hives.

4.  Hive tools,  bee smokers, bee feeders, sugar - All necessary tools for beekeeping - 200.00

5.  Honey Harvesting Equipment - we need to be able to harvest our honey. We need a hand crank extractor, honey bucket, wax bucket. - estimated cost - 400.00

6. Honey bottles, lids, and labels - we need enough bottles to get us started to sell our school's honey! - estimated cost - 200.00

We need funds asap, so we can order bees soon, you can only start bees in the springtime!

After a year or so, we hope to have our club be self sustaining financially, through honey and bee product income!
