Beds for Urban Retreat Camden, NJ

"The person who comes on the first day is not the same person on the last day."- Teresa Reyes, Executive Director

Romero Center Ministries’ mission is to “seek personal, communal, and societal transformation by creating bridges of understanding among people of different backgrounds while responding to our brothers and sisters in need.” We believe that in order to provide participants with an experience that can facilitate such change, hospitality plays a critical role. Our aim is that through our hospitality our guests are comfortable and feel welcome to express themselves so that they might grow during their time spent with us in Camden. So much of this is dependent upon a good night’s rest, which these new beds will accommodate!

The Urban Challenge is a week long program comprised of three fundamental components: faith, service, and community. By emphasizing these components, we hope participants will take action on behalf of the poor and vulnerable, long after participants have left the Romero Center.

Our message is this: Do not focus on the work you do when volunteering, focus on the transformation of the individual by breaking down stereotypes, changing perspectives and mindsets, understanding privilege, and understanding societal structures and how you can change it. Each participant in the program meets someone in Camden personally, where they are. It might be best summed up in the following phrase... Dignity, respect, and opportunity for all.

"What you come to do for Camden is really not important. What is important is that you understand the injustices in the world, and change them. Camden is one example. Be inspired and transform society." - Monsignor Bob McDermott

The Romero Center has currently identified renovations to extend our mission and strengthen the Urban Challenge. Specifically, mattresses! Any alum of our program can speak well to this. The Center hosts more than 1500 young adults annually.  These beds help recharge and energize these young people for the powerful service projects each week.  Though maintained and sanitized, anyone who comes to the Romero sleeps on the mattresses. The ability to be fully present to those we serve is directly influenced by the depth and comfort of sleep. I'm certain our long-time chaperones might agree!

We 'll start at 68 beds in total with a minimum goal to replace 45.  The $5,000 will provide mattresses, mattress covers, removal of the old beds and the box spring. It will also provide the new bed installations.

Should we be wildly successful, we'll look at the opportunity to replace our 15 passenger van which is fresh back from the repair shop... prognosis is not good.
