Our Bec has a big heart. Its time for us to give back to her.
In February 2018 Bec became unwell and collapsed while vacationing in Las Vegas. While her symptoms were that of pneumonia, test results revealed something more sinister. Bec was diagnosed with reentrant ventricular tachycardia, systolic heart failure, and the hereditary, long QT syndrome. Unfortunately this means Bec needs to undergo important and urgent surgery to have a defribullator (pace-maker) fitted in order for her to make it home safely and indeed to keep her healthy for the rest of her life.
Since the diagnosis, Bec has essentially been a helpless patient in the expensive, and somewhat lonely US health system. Although Bec has wonderful family by her bed-side she will need help from us all as she continues to heal and begins her transition into an alternative lifestyle and career (as she will no longer be able to continue as a flight attendant).
Those that know Bec will be as surprised as anyone to learn that such a healthy person could suffer such a miserable diagnosis. She has always led a very healthy lifestyle, built her own successful personal training business, and ran many marathons, triathlons and Ironman events. Bec raised more than $20,000 for the Royal Childrens Hospital by running 20k’s a day for a whole year, and recently ran the length of New Zealand’s north island to contribute much needed funds to the “eat my lunch” campaign providing lunches for NZ school kids. In addition, as a single Mum while at times juggling multiple jobs, Bec managed to raise two incredible young adults, her daughter and son, Bridie and Bailey.
