Orphanage Volunteer Service in Ecuador

As you may already know, I have been accepted into a volunteer program through Orphanage Support Services Organization (OSSO). I will be volunteering my time in Ecuador for two months this coming summer. I am thrilled at this opportunity. If you know me at all, you know that I thrive on staying busy. I can guarantee you, I will be busy working in the orphanages 50 hours a week! For the past few years, I've known this was something I need to do. I researched many different organizations, and I strongly feel that this is the perfect fit for me. But I can't do this alone. As there is a fee for this, I am asking for any donations in any amount that is affordable to you. This is an opportunity for you to not only help me, but more importantly, help the children of Ecuador who will forever be grateful for you!
Orphanage Support Services Organization (OSSO) is a nonprofit organization, providing service to 10-12 orphanages in Cuenca and Quito, Ecuador. OSSO sends volunteers to Cuenca and Quito to work with orphaned and abandoned children. Volunteers do everything from basic child care (such as changing diapers and feeding babies) to doing preschool activities and physical therapy. Most volunteers are college-age students who take a semester away from their studies to give service. Volunteers work very hard under very challenging conditions, and unless they're able to find sponsors, they pay all of their own expenses. I'll be going for 2 months and the total cost for me is $4,010.00"¨"¨Many of the orphanages OSSO serves in are run by Catholic nuns. While the nuns work very hard, they receive little or no support from the local government to care for and feed each child. OSSO tries to help fill in the gaps by providing volunteers educational materials, diapers, food, clothes, and by trying to improve the physical conditions in the orphanages.
I will be serving in Quito and will be there from June 14, 2012 - August 14, 2012. I am extremely fortunate to have been raised in such a wonderful family with strong beliefs and high morals. As I look back on my childhood, I am reminded at the numerous occasions where my family or I were served in a way unimaginable. I feel as though I have been so blessed, it is my time to give back, even just a little bit. I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to go to a third world country and be with children. They say children are the closest thing to heaven, and I completely agree. I've always loved playing with children and even just being in their presence. Having grown up in such an industrialized area, I often find myself focussing more on the "real world," rather than taking a step back and focussing on the things that really matter. As Ecuador is a third world country, and these children are all orphans, the latest and greatest toy, shoe, iphone, etc. are the least of their worries. They are just grateful for another day. It is my hope and prayer that I can go down there and make a difference in even just one little child's life. That I may be able to bring joy and happiness into their days. Sacrificing my summer break off from college, is the least I could do for the experiences I will have. It is time to stop focussing on myself and focus on those that deserve so much more than I do. Again, it is my hope and prayer that if I make a difference in just one child's life, I will forever be grateful for the lessons that child taught me.
They say, the more you put in, the more you get out. If I could, I would love to pay the entire trip myself. Realistically, that isn't possible. This semester I am taking a full load in College of 18 units. On top of that, I am getting certified to be a Pilates teacher which requires hundreds of hours of practice, and involved in different physical activities along with church. But that isn't busy enough for me ;) I will be working part time as a waitress. So with the money I get hourly and in tips, I will be putting a good percentage of it towards my trip. I will be working as often as I can so that I may be able to get the most out of my trip.
As many of us are still recovering from the holidays, I understand budget may be tight. Any contribution you can make of $20, $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, or any amount that is affordable to you, will be greatly appreciated. Simply click on the link to donate.
