Who remembers kindergarten? The first time your ABC’s and numbers were taught to you? Or how about your 5th grade science project? High school admission? College degree? I’m sure everyone has experienced a monumental educational moment; but has anyone ever remembered never even having to opportunity to go to school? For many American’s, that is not a reality, in fact, many students nationwide would rather stay home than be forced to endure a seven-hour school day. However, if you live in third world countries, that is the complete opposite of your desires.
Hi my name is Tia Williams and on February 15, 2016 I set out to change my life by fundraising money to send a child in Haiti to school. My goal was to earn $1000, however, I earned over $2,000! How? Not because of the fact that I am an 18- year old college; it's because of the wonderful people who helped me reach success! My goal is to not bamboozle people out of their money or promise what I cannot deliver; my goal is to change someone’s life through the generosity of others. As some of you may remember, last year I was doing my campaign as part of my senior project at St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Berkeley, California, now I am at St. John’s University in New York City still continuing my passion to change the deserving life of a complete stranger. I decided to make this GoFundMe again because the need for education will never seize. I choose to sponsor a Haitian child because March 2015 I visited Haiti as part of a service learning trip with several other students. The minute I met the children and saw the eyes of another human being living in poverty I knew I had to make a difference. Like the old saying, you can give a man a fish and he can eat for a day, or you can TEACH a man how to fish and he will eat forever. I am no teacher, but I can fundraise so that a student can encounter one. Education is the best thing in the world, you can lose money, power, respect, BUT never your intellect, so why not steer someone in that direction?
Just like the year before, the two wonderful teachers who organizes and takes the trip to Haiti, Mr. Paladino and Mr. Sutphin, will connect with the wonderful Daniel Tillias of Cité Soleí who will then ensure that a student of his choosing becomes the 2017 recipient of our fundraiser! I know a common thought is how legitimate is my campaign, and for any doubters please check out last year’s photos and proof of authenticity. I assure any and every reader that this is as real as you or me. Why should you donate as small as a dollar or as large as a thousand? Because, why SHOULDN’T you? Outside of your everyday life and family, there is a dire need for help, and as privileged everyday people why should we ignore our call to action? I ask that everyone please consider to donate and if you cannot then please share my campaign! Am I just one person, but together we can all change someone’s life simply because, we can. Thank you!
