Hello Everyone. Thank you for checking out my fundraising project. I wanted to share the inspiring story of one man that is trying to make a difference in the lives of a few students. My dear friend Fidel Acevedo from Austin, Texas has been a grassroots activist for many years and a LULAC (League of United American Citizens) member. I’ve worked with him the last few years assisting with administrative stuff and I have never met a man more dedicated to his causes. And any cause he has undertaken, if it was necessary to accomplish his goal, he never hesitated to use personal funds. Fidel Acevedo goes above and beyond to provide opportunities for all students to pursue higher education.
As a LULAC member he has taken it upon himself to lead a group of people to raise funds for their scholarship program. Together they organize at minimum two fundraising events a year to raise funds. Now, the team is ready to step up their fundraising efforts in effort to double the scholarship awards and double the number of students they can award. In 2019, they were able to award three students. Awards were from $500 to $700. It’s not a big amount, but it helps students cover books and supplies.
As a member of Council 4227 - Fidel has led his council and two other councils (#4858 - #4860) in a combined effort organize an annual golf tournament, held at the Morris William Golf Course, in Austin. This is their major project. It takes time and money and many man hours to coordinate such an event.
My role has been to photograph the event, and to help promote it via social media. I do this on a volunteer basis. This year I too wish to go a step further. I am stepping out on faith to raise funds to benefit their program using GoFundMe.
Currently, they offer $500 awards. High school students pursuing higher education apply for these grants. This is their effort to encourage high school students to pursue their educational goals and make their dream of a college degree a reality. As I mentioned, the goal this year is to double the awards and the number of students.
Why a fundraising platform rather than traditional fundraising efforts? Well, two reasons, first I don’t know too many people that golf. Honestly, I know one person. My husband and I play, but we are not that good. Although, my husband is much better.
Second, I do know that there are people out there that support scholarship programs. These three LULAC Councils have been providing funds for Austin graduates for a few years, but they would like to be able to offer more as the number of applications increase every year. This year Fidel and his team awarded three awards. Any funds raised this year will be for next year. Any donation would help with this endeavor.
I am asking you to donate to this worthy cause – to support LULAC Councils (#4858 - #4860 - #4227) Scholarship Fund. Thank you for reading and your generous donation.
