Meet The Wrestlers

Please join me in giving a warm welcome to the 2021 Rhode Island National Fargo Wrestling Team! This is a particularly special bunch as it is the state’s first-ever Beat the Streets Providence inaugural cohort. BTS is a sports-based youth development nonprofit that empowers middle school students to actualize their full potential through the vehicle of coeducational wrestling.  BTS continues to support our high schoolers through mentorship, and provide opportunities for our student athletes throughout their academic careers.

These outstanding 5 - Nicholas Torres, Maurice Cooper, Adolfo Betancur, Isael Perez, and Imanol Tavares are exemplars in their own right of the sheer greatness that emerges from this program. As BTS alumni who now compete at the D1 High School level and have all placed at a National tournament, they continue to represent the Ocean State in a furious fashion as would the daring North Atlantic seas in which they tread. Hope High School Junior Nicholas Torres is fresh off a World Reno’s Finalist placement and the timing couldn’t be more opportue for this sophisticated, Honor Roll, wrestler. Fellow Hope Junior Maurice Cooper continues to impress, placing 4th among his peers in the RI state tournament, as well as placing 5th place at the World Reno tournament and maintaining a B or higher in all of his classes. Keep your eyes peeled for breakout Hendricken High School wrestler, Adolfo Betancur who is currently ranked 1st in the state and New England in his respective weight class. Underclassman Hope High School, Imanol Tavares, rises to the challenge time and time again as the preeminent sophomore and 1st place JV states winner. Lastly, the youngest of the unit with incredible promise, Hope Freshman, Israel Perez, turns heads as an 8th grade State Champ and Reno World’s All-American. The excitement and anticipation around these young men cannot be overstated. Their resiliency as not only wrestlers, but as human beings is distinct and palpable. They have emboldened the sport of wrestling as well as human conduct through their principled sportsmanship and unwavering character on and off the mat. We are proud of you for representing the Ocean State. Good luck boys!

Meet The Coaches

RI National Team Coaches 2021!

If there’s one individual who embodies Rhode Island wrestling and coaching excellence, it's Rhode Island College First-Team All-Star and 2008-09 RI Wrestler of the Year, Shawn Giblin. Shawn has consistently competed at some of the most elite levels of wrestling offered within the state and beyond. His remarkable 21-4 record with the NCAA Division III Anchorman is a testament to his knack for success on and off the mat. Coach Giblin continues to evolve and shape the sport of wrestling for all Rhode Islanders alike. Exercising his advanced wrestling IQ, Shawn has since shifted his focus into developing younger ability as the D1 Hope High School Assistant Coach. Additionally, he continues to influence middle school clubs like Beat the Streets by synergizing RI wrestling talent across all ages. Shawn is a force to be reckoned with on virtually every dimension of Rhode Island Wrestling. Do not let his state’s small size fool you - for the bigger they are the harder they fall.

Program Director Silas Murray will be an assistant coach for this Rhode Island National team as well. Silas achieved great levels of success as a 2008 & 2014 NCAA All-American. After graduating in 2015 with a major in Youth Development and Non-Profit Studies, Silas started working with Beat the Streets. Quickly, his role grew into a full-time head coach position and program director as his efforts to develop young people into healthy wrestlers became recognized across the state. His dedication to the program and athletes has changed the lives of literally hundreds of Rhode Island young people. Coach Murray attributes much of his lifelong success to the sport of wrestling and there is no question, Rhodie is where the allegiance lies for this great collegiate wrestler turned program director. #ANCHORSTRONG
