As a friend of the Chartrand family, I wanted to find a way to raise funds for the Chartrand families medical expenses that are not covered by the families insurance. Examples include: Gas to and from the hospital, parking fees, special dietary needs for Joey and meals out on days when the families time is spent at the hospital with Joey. So many friends/classmates of Joey's have asked how they can help, and hopefully this will provide one way of doing so.
Any donations that are raised above the families needs will be donated to the American Cancer Society and ALL DONATIONS WILL ONLY BE USED FOR JOEY'S CARE!
Joey Chartrand, 11 years old, and a student in the QV School District, was diagnosed with stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in February 2014. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue cancer that accounts for 3% of all childhood cancer cases – alveolar is the more aggressive type of rhabdo. Joey is required to go through 54 weeks of aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Due to his intense chemo schedule, Joey is not allowed to attend school until all treatments are complete. His immune system is going to be pretty much nonexistent throughout the next year due to his treatments. A lot of Joey’s chemo treatments require him to have 5 night stays at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Our family’s life has been turned upside-down. We have been struggling to maintain somewhat of a work schedule between weekly and sometimes daily visits to the hospital as well as the unexpected ER stays due to complications. Joey’s radiation treatments are due to start within the next few weeks – this requires us to make daily visits to the hospital Monday-Friday for up to 4 weeks straight. Life has been throwing many curve balls over the past 4 months and its only going to get more difficult from here. Joey as well as our family has a long and tough journey ahead of us. Thanks to our loving and supportive family and community, we are making it through one day at a time.
