Be The Light Project
What is "Be the Light"?
Help me buy the materials for "Be The Light," an interactive public art project for the holiday season in Del Ray, Alexandria, VA.
Here's how the project will work: people will write how they will be the light for others on a blank gift card, then light a (battery operated) candle and place them on a community display. A huge (24' x 8') display will house over a thousand candles and intentions. Passers-by can be inspired by reading others' messages and write their own.
I hope to have thousands of people giving the gift of themselves this season as a result of this project.
Why are we asking for your contributions?
I want this project to be a true community effort. Let's fund it together and build it together. There are so many people who are looking for ways to build a stronger community, and this can be a very visual and fulfilling way to get involved.
Funds raised will cover lumber to build the shelving unit (we are reusing some of the lumber from the Courage Wall), paint, battery-operated candles, gift tags and signage to help people understand what to do. All labor is donated.
Who is involved?
I'm leading the project and was inspired by Pat Miller's hope that we find ways to contribute to others this holiday season. We're enlisting the support of local businesses in the Del Ray Business Association to distribute supplies. In an effort to make this a true community effort, we'll be asking our neighbors for help in construction and maintenance.
By when do I need the funds?
We are launching the project on December 3, 2016, so we'd love to receive contributions prior to that, if possible. I'll front the money to get us started, but can only continue to do these types of projects with your help. Please contribute whatever you can to help us build another project in Del Ray that promotes kindness, compassion and generosity!
