Be the Change Nepal

UPDATE 30/10/2019: I am delighted to have raised £900 across two Go Fund Me pages. I am heading off to Nepal next week and I will be putting your donations to good use!

I am aiming to raise £1000 to support a vital uplift project which will take place in November 2019, in Nepal. With your support I’ll be embarking on a journey to put my business experience and creativity to the test, working with the villagers of Runga to develop solutions to their most pressing needs, help them become independent and regain dignity even in the most challenging of times.

This project is part of Be the Change - a global programme that is turning the model of social change on its head - providing those in need across the world not with handouts but with support, knowledge and experience to be the change in their own communities  - a hand up, not a hand out.

Your donation will provide valuable materials for our project, enabling us to implement our personal uplift projects during our stay in Runga - and witness the immediate impact of the legacy.

It can take as little as £500 to turn around the fortunes of families and even entire villages.

Sustainable change for Runga

The  Buddhist village of Runga, eight hours east of Kathmandu, nestled on a Himalayan hillside  is small and remote. The landscape is diverse, set against a majestic backdrop of mountains - most famous for Mount Everest. While the region attracts a plethora of visitors they rarely experience the difficulties of life for villagers in this beautiful but unforgiving landscape.

Alongside other entrepreneurs taking part in the Be the Change programme of 2019 I will immerse myself in the culture of Runga to understand their challenges and help offer lasting solutions.

Unlike other volunteer programmes we won’t be parachuted in to build a school or dig wells - these kinds of interventions are well intentioned but ill-suited to solving underlying challenges.

Instead we will arrive with no prior assumptions of the issues the villagers face on the ground. We will spend time with village elders, educators and health workers to understand life in the region and collaborate with them to develop a long-lasting, sustainable and appropriate program that the village can take forward for itself long after we leave.

Whether education, healthcare or income-generation our time in Nepal will be used to focus on the real needs of the community and real solutions, taking advantage of our collective experience as entrepreneurs alongside regional knowledge of those living these issues.

For example, previous Be the Change volunteers have helped build profit making businesses from traditional rubber harvesting, bee-keeping and candle-making cooperatives that have boosted income and hope for numerous families. Other projects have targeted water, energy, health and education.

Why am I part of Be the Change?

While I am an entrepreneur and business owner I am first and foremost a member of our global community and for me, the mark of success is being able to share my experiences and try to better the world we live in. I’m not driven by profit but by what running a business allows me to give back.

For example, last year I was able to take time out of the business to run weekly cooking sessions in a homeless shelter for those who wanted to learn to cook for themselves. This year Jaluch has helped fundraise £40,000 for medical supplies which are heading to the Lalibela Medical Centre in Ethiopia.

My business Jaluch’s long term chosen venture is Global Fountain, a social enterprise we will be setting up to support people around the world who can’t find employment through usual channels and so need to develop the skills and confidence to set up and run a  business of their own. The end goal being a business of their own which will enable them to achieve a level of financial independence.

Being part of Be the Change will not only bring a positive change to the people of Runga, but I hope it will provide valuable experience I can take forward to build Global Fountain even further.

Thank you for reading. Any donation however large or small will make a real difference, and I look forward to sharing the results of Be the Change later this year.
