11 years ago in November 2008 Rusty suffered a septic infection that would change his life forever. After enduring 23 surgeries in 26 days and spending over 8 months in the hospital and rehab facility, he began his new life being mostly confined to a wheelchair. While his new norm wasn’t always easy, being the Rusty we all know and love, he made the most of his situation. He found great joy in the occasional lunch with some of his closest friends and spending time with his family. But, Rusty’s world would soon be rocked again.
In June 2019 Rusty suffered a stroke that would leave him in the hospital for nearly a month while struggling to regain his physical strength and ability to speak. Rusty was able to go home but just a couple short months later he started having severe pain in his spine. After a week or so of excruciating pain he was taken to the ER where they discovered he had a urinary tract infection and a pocket of the infection had landed on his spine causing yet another septic infection. With his heart failing and body giving out Rusty was sent flight for life to Denver. He was once again, in the fight for his life. He has been in the hospital and now rehab facility since September. While his physical therapy is going well, he has a long road ahead of him.
We are setting up this GoFundMe in order to help alleviate the financial burden on Bonnie and Rusty. Not only does this include increasing medical bills but also travel expenses his wife, Bonnie, has incurred each week while driving back and forth from Vail to Denver and living expenses related to housing in both Denver and Vail.
It is during times such as these that we, as a community and friends, find ourselves able to gather to provide strength and support to long time locals in need. We are extremely grateful for any assistance you may be able to provide. Thank you for keeping the Wood family in your thoughts and for contributing what you can during this incredibly overwhelming time.
