I was recently involved in an eviction of a home where the only occupant was an 82 year old man. He has no family in the US and nowhere to go. He is from Buenos Aires, Argentina and is now a US citizen. His only surviving family members are his brother and sister in Argentina, who are 80 and 78, respectively. He wants to go back to his country but he does not have the money to buy a ticket home. He is working on getting his paperwork in order. I want to get him the ticket. Nonstop flights to Argentina are $1600 more or less. In addition, he needs a place to stay in the meantime and money to cover the paperwork (IDs, updated Passport, etc.) If you are willing to help and chip in, I would appreciate it.

As you may know, I have been selling REO (bank owned properties) since 2001. As part of my role, I am involved with the eviction process. The banks use an attorney to facilitate the eviction and I attend the eviction, meet at the property with the sheriff and complete the eviction. I have been involved in hundreds of evictions. Although tragic and tough on the occupants, most people figure out their options and move out and move on. In my 13 years of taking part in these evictions, I have never become personally involved in helping any of these people. I have always kept it formal and at arm’s length as part of my profession.

Bernardo is different! He touched my heart deeply. Despite the despair he must have felt, he did not beg or plea for help. He said "If I have to go, I will" and he started packing his suit case. He even tried to help the eviction crew move out his stuff! It broke my heart to see a man so down on his luck and so proud that he would not ask for help. I asked him where will you stay and he replied "I don’t know". We had to follow through with the eviction, so I decided to find him a hotel to stay for a couple of days until we could figure something out for him.

We have all made some bad choices, we have all had some bad luck and we have all had someone who believed in us enough to help us out! If you feel moved to help, please do!
