Many are doing it tough around the world due to the Covid pandemic. Many children on a small tropical island near India have been hit particularly hard due to schools closing, extreme unemployment amongst parents and increasing rates of domestic violence. Schools are not only an important place to learn, but for many children from very poor families, school is a place where the teachers can ensure that children have at least one meal a day.
My brother Johnny and his wife Piriya have been, since early on when the pandemic started, feeding and teaching the children in their village at Education Farm, on their own farm land and in their home. Word has spread and now more and more children come to learn, eat and enjoy feeling safe. Every day they have around 30 to 40 children come to their home and farm. For some time now they have also been employing a young woman to help with teaching and her pay is also funded by Johnny and his family. Everything Johnny and Piriya need they buy out of their own funds or grow themselves and usually make ends meet with a few donations from friends. However, with no end to the pandemic in sight, and more and more children coming to Education Farm every day, funding is getting tight. This makes it difficult for them to feed, educate and provide a safe haven for the children.
Johnny and Piriya are hoping to be able to build a large water tank very soon, so that they are able to grow more food during the long dry season. This water tank would not only supply water but also offer the opportunity of employment to villagers involved in food production, meaning better food security for the children visiting Education Farm and the village, along with building resilience for the whole community.
