BCHL Player Relief

Everyone in our family and friend group has been affected by COVID-19 one way or another. The British Columbia Hockey League ("BCHL") has been no exception as they had no choice but to end the previous season early.

However, challenges still prevail and the league and the BCHL Alumni Association is working cohesively to help mitigate these obstacles for teams and players during this upcoming season.

The BCHL prides itself on being a top tier junior hockey platform showcasing some of North America's top talent. It has consistently been the most successful Canadian Junior Hockey League in advancing players to attain National Collegiate Athletic Associations (“NCAA”) scholarships. The league has led the way in providing equipment, uniforms and additional supplementary services to players without the need for league fees and financial commitments.

Unfortunately, given the current economic conditions and the unknown circumstances COVID-19 has provided the league, this is no longer feasible. Despite the League's best efforts, league fees will be required for players for the first time in order to maintain the player experience the BCHL prides itself on.

The BCHL Alumni Association is creating a gofundme page and campaign to support players in need of financial assistance for the 2020/2021 season. Through community contributions and support, we can help create more opportunities for players and the league can continue to be the top development league for NCAA-bound athletes.

FAQ’s

How much are players paying to play this season?

Teams are charging enough to cover the costs of running a franchise without fans.

How many players in the BCHL are having difficulty paying their fees?

As of right now, the BCHL Alumni Association has identified 20 players who have raised concerns about being able to afford player fees. We assume there is between 20-30.

How is the BCHL Alumni Association deciding which players qualify? How much will each player receive?

The BCHL Alumni Association will go through a number of team and parent application forms to help decide what player and how much they will receive. If the player qualifies, the amount will be decided on the player/parent financial assistance needed, COVID-19 player/family situation, and the number of games played in the BCHL. All of the funds raised will be donated towards the players in need’s team fees.

Will you be announcing the player recipients?

No, all recipients will be confidential.
We will announce the amount raised and number of players that were assisted.

How are the funds being distributed for the player fees?

Once a player has been selected, the Alumni Association will notify the player, parent, and team of how much will be donated towards the players team fees. A cheque will then be sent to the team to be put towards the players’ fee.

Is the BCHL Alumni Association apart of the BCHL?

No, The BCHL Alumni Association is a separate group made up of BCHL alumni.
