Esperanza Project

The Youth of Upper Room Ministry has come together to begin a project that aids the local homeless population in Asheville, North Carolina. We will be collecting funds to be able to buy supplies that may be difficult to come by and putting together care packs to distribute to those in need. The items we will be buying include drawstring bags, masks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, bandaids, alcohol wipes, socks, ponchos, feminine products, snacks and water. We will also be accepting donations, such as blankets, coats, sweaters, jackets, gloves, scarves and beanies.

Fourteen percent of North Carolina’s population is homeless and the lack of affordable housing in Asheville makes it difficult for people to be able to get back on their feet. Especially with a pandemic going on there has been a lack of jobs and as colder weather comes in those people have a higher risk of becoming ill. The money we have left over will be donated to Homeward Bound WNC.  Homeward Bound is a program that prioritizes providing permanent housing to people experiencing homelessness. Their approach is guided by the belief that people need basic necessities like food and a place to live before attending to anything less critical, such as getting a job, budgeting properly, or attending to substance use issues.
