Jack's Medical Fund

On August 12, 2017 my dad Jack was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome after experiencing numbness and tingling in both hands and feet for a few days. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a condition in which the immune system attacks its own nerve cells and causes ascending muscle and nerve weakness. Jack went from doing all of his normal activities like working, and riding his motorcycle to being unable to stand or move his legs on his own. Jack was admitted to Parkland Medical Center on August 12, 2017 where he spent a total of 9 days. The first 6 of these 9 days he got treatment for the Guillain-Barre in the form of IVIG infusions. This infusion treatment goes to work repairing the damaged nerves to begin the healing process. He worked with Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) as well during his stay at Parkland. Over the course of these 9 days the nerve and muscle weakness worsened and affected his feet, legs, hips, arms, hands, face and his speech. Even holding a fork or pencil proved to be a difficult task.

On August 21, 2017 Jack was moved from Parkland Medical Center to an acute rehab facility at Catholic Medical Center (CMC). While at CMC he began intensive PT, OT and Speech Therapy (ST) treatments. The recovery for Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a process and can take years for him to regain full strength and make a full come back. Jack has worked extremely hard while at CMC and in the first couple weeks went from being unable to walk or move his legs on his own to standing and sitting upright without falling over. Jack has continued to work hard and has made enormous improvements. He now able to walk with a walker or cane and has climbed a flight of stairs!

Since August my dad has been unable to work. Even with insurance the medical bills are tremendous. Any funds collected will go directly to his medical bills.

As of right now, the pending discharge date for my dad is October 20, 2017. If released on this date, it will make a total of 70 days in the hospital!

My mother, sister, brother and I are all extremely proud of him and all he has accomplished.  He is still continuing to improve every day! Thank you all for the continued thoughts and prayers throughout this entire journey.
