Hurricane Irma has put the Baylac family in a tight spot.
Jorge and Jeny started receiving guests in their Havana home in 2016 and have since had hundreds of visitors from all over the world. Testament to their hospitality is the fact that they have received 52 five star reviews on Airbnb. Not a single person out of the hundreds of guests that have stayed with them has given them less than five stars.
The Baylac family had all sorts of ambitions to further develop their family business, including refurbishing their old colonial home. However, the devastation left by Hurricane Irma may put an end to these dreams. Their home's close proximity to the ocean meant they were affected by the flooding. Their water tank and water pump have been damaged and have to be replaced. The old wooden colonial structure has not weathered the tropical storm well and will not last if they are not refurbished soon. There are no insurers in Cuba. They will have to bear the costs themselves.
