Battling the Virus-Cristi Haley- PPE&Face Shields

Beschermde donatie
Battling the Virus by Cristi Haley….

Update and Summary:
I want to thank everyone that contributed to this project and provide an update on what was accomplished. In March of 2020, the rise of the unfamiliar and unpredictable Coronavirus caused a shortage of PPE gear. After experiencing the compassion of healthcare heroes who were risking their lives to help others, I wanted to help. With your help, I was able to deliver over 150 PPE face shields to MiamiFightingCovid for
assembly and delivery to healthcare workers, firefighters, and more. Through this GoFundMe we more than doubled our initial goal and raised $2,015! These contributions were forwarded to help the MiamiFightingCovid team ($1800) and used to purchase materials necessary to create the face shields ($200 from GoFundMe + $300 of my own contributions).
As of the last published update in August of 2020, the MiamiFightingCovid team hand-delivered over 18,000 pieces of PPE to local nurses, firemen, nursing home staff, hospitals, schools, and medical centers. Additionally, it was a fantastic experience for me to be part of a global maker community comprised of 42,000 makers/assemblers from 86 countries, 93% of which were volunteers. This community was able to deliver over 48 million pieces of PPE & medical supplies worth over $271 million in total. This project is officially closed.

A Note from Moonlighter:
"We received confirmation from our CPA that the $1800 in donations have been received and processed. Thank you so much for your generosity and help to make this initiative successful. None of it is possible without the support of the community members that get involved. For you to not only raise money and give financially but also organize the printing of headbands to help fulfill the need speaks volumes of the values you have to make a real impact! We sincerely thank you for your efforts - you are part of a huge local community collective that has delivered over 18,000 pieces of PPE! We have actually continued to deliver PPE even in 2022!" - Tom Pupo & Daisy Nodal (Co-Founders, MoonlighterFabLab)

Article from Saint Andrew's School:

Project Description:
Healthcare workers are working tirelessly around the clock to help us, and now it’s our turn to show our gratitude. Every day they are going to work and risking their lives, with little to no protection against this virus. I was inspired when I saw others who were helping to battle the virus and wondered, as a high school student, “what could I do?”. I saw the shortage in PPE gear and decided I could help by making face shields. I purchased a 3D Printer, found an NIH-approved design, researched local organizations that could deliver them, and began printing the face shields.

With your help, I can continue to produce these face shields. I hope to begin by creating 100 face shields, then progress from there. With a contribution of $25, I can create 5 more shields, as well as protect five more lives. All contributions, no matter the size, help!

Please contribute and spread the word and help us Battle the Virus! Follow @3dprintingwithapurpose on Instagram for updates and to see the impact your contributions are having!

Use of Funds:
Our initial supplies and equipment were $500. Your contributions will be used to purchase additional materials, such as filament, to produce the visors for the face shields. As the visors are completed, they will be given to local organizations that assemble, sanitize, and distribute them to individuals and organizations in need. In the case that I raise more funds than I needed to cover expenses and taxes, funds are used to help other reputable organizations (see below) that need the funds to procure materials to produce PPE to battle Covid19.

Benefactors
After researching local organizations, I located two organizations that are effectively assembling, sanitizing, and distributing PPE gear to healthcare workers, first responders, and hospitals. I am confident that the visors I create with your contributions will be used and distributed to healthcare heroes through these organizations. MiamiFightingCovid and MoonlighterFablab in support of OSMS Face Shields are communities of volunteers who have altered their businesses and given their time to help our healthcare heroes.

Advisors
I want to personally thank Mario the Maker, Dan at Velossa Tech, Allan Phipps at FAU|ADHUS, and Alex at Davincis3D lounge for sharing their knowledge to help me get started on this journey and answering the many questions I reached out with as a new maker.

More About Me
I am currently a 9th-grade high school student that feels passionate about helping people Battle the Virus. I have personally seen friends and family that have been affected by the virus as well as helped people recover from it. I am so grateful for all their efforts, and that is what motivated me to begin this project. I hope to have an impact, no matter the size.

Final Reflections
In addition to being able to help so many in our community, this project taught me a lot...
  • It’s often easy to think that as an individual, your small contributions can’t have a big impact. Yet, this taught me that many, many, many individuals working together can have a significant and positive impact for the greater good.
  • New unforeseen problems can be solved quickly with rapid innovation and a collaborative effort.
  • Teaching myself how to use a 3D printer was both more frustrating and more rewarding than I anticipated.
  • I was grateful to and in awe of the selflessness of the volunteers who helped in every way – from the healthcare workers to the Miami Fighting Covid Team to the Moonlighter FabLab to the friends, teachers, and families that contributed to this cause.

Thank you all & stay healthy!!
