Get Clean Water to Batey Libertad

Below is a description of the original project which was successfully funded within a month thanks to the generous support of many.  The community of Batey Libertad now has water!

Water spigots were placed outside of 200 homes in Batey Libertad.  Water spigots outside of the homes causes problems. If they are left on, puddles of water are created, which attracts mosquitoes, which could lead to an increase in malaria.  Community education on care of the spigots and responsible use of water has been completed and has made a difference in the amount of standing water.  However, understandably, children are still tempted to play with the water.  So, the goal now is to move the spigots into family homes.

Early this fall, a group donated just over $1000 to move half of the spigots indoors.  This has greatly decreased the amount of standing water in the community.  They need just over $1000 more dollars to move the other half of the spigots into family homes.  I told Papito we could do it, so let's do it!

Can 10 people find 10 people to give $10?  Or can 10 people give $100?  I am confident we can find our way to $1000.

Thank you in advance for your generosity for Batey Libertad!

8/31/13 Batey Libertad, a community in the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic, is a densely populated area with over 2,000 residents. The community consists primarily of first, second and third generation Haitians. The residents of Batey Libertad have been working for decades to bring clean water to their community. Currently the residents must purchase small plastic bags of clean water. The water is costly and the plastic bags are creating more trash that doesn't degrade to a sanitation system that is already struggling. Residents who cannot afford the bags of clean water are forced to rely on river water, which is dark brown and full of fertilizer from the fields - not to mention everything else it is full of. The unsanitary water conditions have been linked to increased incidents of skin infections, dysentery, and disease.

Past attempts to bring water to the community have failed because the necessary, basic infrastructure was lacking. With support from the nearby city of Esperanza, Batey Libertad, has developed a plan that is achievable, sustainable, technically sound and extremely cost effective. Batey Libertad's contribution to this project is the labor and the tubing that will bring the water from the street to the community. Professionals will oversee the project and direct the work.
