Ball Court for Special Ed School
Donation protected
Murrell is a special education school serving grades K-8. Students go to Murrell to gain the skills necessary to re-enter a typical school environment successfully. They moved to a new building this school year, and the only outside activity area is a playground for younger children. The students really miss their basketball court and need a place to play outside as they foster relationships with adults, as well as each other. Please support me in meeting this essential goal. These kids deserve it!
Notes from investors . . .
“While working as a therapist at Murrell, I soon realized the invaluable role the basketball court played in my sessions. The kiddos I was working with needed a space in which they could build a trusting relationship with me, release excess energy, and feel safe; in turn, I needed a setting in which I could meet kids where they were emotionally, help them process difficult emotions, practice frustration tolerance, and give them the opportunity to be seen, be heard, and laugh. As an adult, doing an activity “side-by-side” with a child is much less intimidating than a conversation “face-to-face,” and the basketball court allowed kiddos share and engage more easily in the therapeutic relationship. Most importantly, therapy in this setting gave these kiddos the chance to just be kids—to play, to be excited, to run around, to cheer, to celebrate, and to explore childhood. The students, faculty, therapists and staff at Murrell deserve these continued opportunities.” - C.M.
