Basil's Surgery Fund

Donation protected
Hi all. This past March I adopted a puppy from North Shore Animal League of America; I named him Basil and he is the love of my life and my best friend. I could not have asked for a better dog. Over the past couple months we noticed he started walking a little strange, almost waddling and that his front legs were significantly shorter than his back legs. We brought him to the vet to check it out and she recommended they do x-rays to get a better idea as to what was going on. To my surprise, the x-rays showed my poor little guy has a lot of problems. He was diagnosed with Osteochondrodysplasia AND luxating patellas.

Having absolutely no idea what either meant.. I did some research. In short, Osteochondrodysplasia is a congenital disease in which the dogs bones and cartilage form improperly; and luxating patellas or "floating kneecaps," is a condition where the dogs knee caps slide in and out of place. There are four grades of luxating patella varying in severity. Basil has grade four luxating patellas (the most severe grade); this means that his kneecap will not stay in place (not even for short amounts of time) and makes it difficult for him to walk. Both of these disorders cause him a great deal of pain and limit him tremendously.

Over the past few weeks, his condition has worsened significantly. He can barely walk a few feet before having to sit or lay down. His back legs give out on him causing him to collapse. He's ten months old and all he wants to do is run around and play and it is truly heartbreaking to see him like this.

We brought him to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip to have an orthopedic specialist take a look at him. She told us he needs surgery on both knees immediately. His first surgery is scheduled two weeks from now and the second one will likely be scheduled two to three weeks after that depending on how well he is recovering.

Together the two surgeries will cost me $13,000; money I simply do not have. I am asking for your help. Please help me to raise money for my Basil's surgeries and help him to live a long , healthy and happy life!
