Heart for Baseco

Baseco is Manila's largest slum and home to approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Children make up a sizable population of the slum.

During the school holiday between Term 3 and Term 4 this year, Johan (Year 5 student at Barker College) and I will journey to Manila, The Philippines, to spend some time volunteering at Baseco. We will be accompanied by my brother (David), who has been to Baseco many times over the past decade on Mission trips and who continues to support the work of the local church.

We are self funding the trip so every dollar raised will go directly to the people who need it the most.

Funds will be used for the following items:

Combantrin De-Worming Chocolate Squares 

This is not available in The Philippines so we can only buy this in Australia. It is approx. AU$18 for a pack of 24 chocolate squares. Thanks to funds raised and donations received, we have managed to get hold of 3,500 chocolate squares which we will be giving out in Baseco.

Stationery (crayons, coloured pencils, books, etc.)

This is cheaper to buy in The Philippines so we will be collecting money that we can then use to purchase the items once we arrive in Manila. Estimate cost is 8,000 Pesos = approx. AU$215.

Rice & Feeding Program

Estimated cost to buy and distribute rice and other food is 20,000 Pesos = approx. AU$520.

Local Resident's House Renovation

Estimated cost for a house renovation is 20,000 Pesos per house = approx. AU$520. The more money we raise, the more families we can help to upgrade their homes.

Rental House Renovation

There is an empty plot next to the local church and the aim is to build a house on it so the church can rent it out and derive steady income to support the work of the local church. Estimated cost is 80,000 Pesos = approx. AU$2,077.

Kids Party & Toys

Estimated cost is 10,000 Pesos = approx. AU$260.

"Baseco Got Talent" Show

Estimated cost is 11,000 Pesos = approx. AU$286.

Rent for Venue and Equipment

Estimated cost is 1,000 Pesos = approx. AU$25.

We will keep and show the receipts for purchased items for transparency and accountability.
