The Program: Theo and I have been working to put together a program that helps veterans through equine assisted learning. More specifically, we have put together a week long program in Arizona, during which veterans will work with Mustangs (wild horses that have had little human contact), and their family members will have the opportunity to spend time at a beautiful ranch and learn about horsemanship. Our hope is that by including families in the program, veterans will have an easier time reintegrating into life at home and society at large.
Why Horses: Horses are prey animals, their initial goal is always self-preservation, but they also cultivate strong bonds with humans. Non-verbal communication, an inherent part of working with horses, encourages people to more actively utilize their instincts and better understand the emotional base of their reactions. This can be particularly beneficial to those who have served our country, individuals who understand what it means to push themselves past unbelievable thresholds, and can therefore appreciate the patience, mental diligence, and physical resourcefulness that is required to work with horses. What Your Money Will Support:
We are providing this program at no cost to the veterans. So far we are entirely self-funded and also have been fortunate to receive support from local organizations (including the ranch where veterans and their families will stay), and an excellent and well known mustang trainer.
We are now hoping to receive some support from family and friends for additional costs. Your contributions will go directly to travel expenses (one family is coming in from Michigan) and video production costs. We plan to put together a promotional video about the pilot, which will not only help us garner financial support for future programs, but also spread the word about the various ways we can support our veterans!
