Barnello Family Fighting Diabetes

Donation protected
Peter Barnello is a father, husband, brother, and uncle who has suffered a harder year than most. A Syracuse, NY, native, Peter "Pete" has been fighting a losing battle against diabetes and his health as a whole.  He is a father of two children, Amber (26) who is a Registered Nurse studying to become a Nurse Practitioner. And Edward (23) who is studying to become a Physical Therapy Assistant. Both children attended Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. He has been married to his wife, Mary, for over 20 years. Despite having a beautiful family, a long history of working and providing for those around him, and being a friend to all... Pete is facing unfortunate and serious health circumstances

Since being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes over a decade ago, Pete's health has been slowly but steadily declining. Diabetes has caused every major health problem in Pete's life, and especially this past year.

Since being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, Pete has had TWO major  heart attacks. He was shortly after diagnosed with MRSA. And after that.. He was diagnosed with West Nile Virus, which he miraculously survived.

But despite those past medical problems, 2017 has been Pete's worst year to date. Throughout this year, he has suffered from multiple grusome infections in his feet, leaving him in different hospitals for weeks on end. Including months of therapy, doctors and recovery that were not covered or only partially covered by the family's insurance.  As a result of the diabetes-induced infections in August of this year, Pete lost the battle with the infection in his big toe. His right big toe was amputated.

Shortly after his amputation while still recovering, Pete was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. A huge blow to his health and to his family. This ensued another lengthy hospital stay, and more mounting medical bills due to poor insurance.

As of November 2017.. Pete is back in the hospital. The week of Thanksgiving he and his family noticed another problem with his feet. Within days Pete was taken to the emergency room, admitted to the hospital, and has now been given a diagnosis. He will have all the toes on his right foot amputated in hopes to save the entire foot - his second amputation of 2017.

Although Pete has a strong support system from his family and friends, medical bills are becoming crushing. With only his wife, Mary, to work for the last year, the Barnello family is nearing $40,000 in medical bill debt. Insurance has provided little to nothing for the Barnello family. So many times Pete and his family have been denied medical treatments by their insurance, that were a necesity for his recovery. Including costs to see specialists for his feet and his diabetes, eye doctors to help with his failing eye sight, and wound care specialists. Pete requires a special shoe for his wounded and infection prone foot, that insurance has refused to help cover. Better treatments and better specialists and recovery options have been denied over and over. Both Mary and Pete Barnello are hardworking, loving, and selfless people that have never asked for hand-outs. At this time, they are reaching out for help from their friends and community members.

Pete Barnello is a selfless person who has always been involved in his community, and has spent his life doing a multitude of volunteer work. His family likes to joke that, "if Pete got paid for all the volunteer work he did, they'd be rich!" He volunteered for years with his family's Alma Mater CBA, and devoted years of his life to coaching little eague basebal for his son and the community. He also has always been highly involved with the boxing community in Syracuse. While he has been sick for so long, he continues to offer to help those around him. He is at times incapacitated by his illnesses.. and STILL continues to offer his time to help his loved ones.. his neighbors.. and the community.

Anyone who has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes knows the suffering that this disease can bring. The Barnello family needs your help this holiday season. Any amount of money will help this incredible family, and will ease the burden of debt that they are facing.

Thank you so much, and Happy Holidays.
