Bariatric Surgery for Diabetes

Many of you know that I have been suffering from Diabetes since 2015. That journey has taken me on a roller coaster of health related issues. Since 2015, I have seen 7 different doctors, 3 different nutritionists, and 2 different exercise physiologists. Each coming to the conclusion that they didn’t have a way to help me manage my diabetes.
Over time diabetes will destroy your main system functions (things like liver, kidney, pancreas, nerve and eyes) — and if that doesn’t get you - a lot of patients end up with heart attack or stroke.
Even as we speak I have started to have nerve damage in my hands and legs which makes it very hard to even play a guitar on the weekends. Other things like brain fog have made it hard to learn music and other symptoms have kept me from work and other activities.
Recently I have been working with a Bariatric surgeon to gain clearance for a sleeve gastrectomy. This surgery will remove 90% of my stomach and severely limit my food intake for the rest of my life. Sounds fun huh? The reason I am doing this is because patients who have the surgery have a good chance to put diabetes into remission. I’ll be trading the ability to eat whatever I want to extend my life a little longer.
So with a lot of prayer and thought — and about 15 clearances from all kinds of doctors — I am approved for surgery. Trick is — the surgery has to go down very quick from the clearance date — which was yesterday afternoon — which means I will have surgery next Friday (December 27).
