Barcs Rescue Bus

Let’s help save some doggies.

Yesterday, I got a call that I won’t soon forget, and thought it was important that I share it.  I sell new school buses and feel passionate about that role, however this call taught me that sometimes used school buses do an equally important job.

I learned a valuable lesson in life , and promise to be more open to calls that start off in the same way.  In my career, hundreds of calls have started exactly like this, but none has ever ended like this one did.

Me:  Hello, Joel speaking.

Caller:  Hi, I just bought a 1998 International School Bus and I’m hoping you can help me.

Me:  Ok, maybe.

Caller:  I can’t find the serial number and can’t insure it or get plates.

Me:  Umm, ok.  It’s on a metal plate above the windshield.

Caller:  It’s not there.

Me:  Ok, well maybe it’s missing but that’s where it belongs.

Caller:  Well, I need the serial number to insure it.

Me: Ok, I’m not sure I can help.

Caller:  You have to help me, I just spent $6000.00 on this bus.

I’m now convinced the lady on the line bought an old bus to convert to an RV, and suddenly think we are going to be a free support resource.

Me:  I don’t know what I can do, call the person who sold it to you.

Trying to prove my preconception, I decide to ask her what I thought would be the last question of our conversation.

Me:  What do you want to do with the bus?

Caller:  I run an organization called Barcs.  We rescue dogs from kill shelters in the US, and since the pandemic started we can’t go get them without a commercial vehicle as the border is closed to non-essential travel.  So, I bought a school bus and want to register it as a commercial vehicle so we can get across to rescue the dogs.

Me:  (Pause…) I’m going to help you. (Trying to keep my voice from cracking)

This organization bought an old school bus to get around border restrictions so that dogs can be adopted rather than killed.

She got the bus registered.  That school bus will bring dogs to their best life in Canada, pandemic be damned.

I’d like to help a bit more, and thought you might consider joining me.
