Barb's Kickin Cancer's Butt!!!

Donazione protetta
Sovereign. That is the word I would use to describe our mother. She has proven to be the epitome of strength. To those of you we know and those of you we have yet to meet, my family is asking for your help. Our mother, Barbara, has been battling advanced cancer and she now requires special treatments that are quite costly. Barb is a beautiful, vivacious, fun-loving mother of five, grandmother of 13, and great-grandmother of one. We need your help, hope, prayers, and positive thoughts in our efforts to afford us the opportunity to continue making each moment with this incredible woman count.

Unfortunately, in August of 2010, our mom was diagnosed with Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma (BAC). BAC makes up a very small percentage of lung cancers found mainly in non-smokers and women. As expected, she has fought this monster vigorously. Throughout all of the chemotherapy treatments, she has managed to smile and laugh through it all. This woman has not skipped a beat. She is present for all of the important games and events for her 13 grandchildren and has not missed a "golf Sunday" yet!

The joys in her life, which most would consider "normal", are becoming increasingly more challenging with the monster my mother lives with daily.

Our mom has reached a point in her treatment where she has to be qualified for trials that are not necessarily open for the public quite yet. After speaking with a few friends in the Healthcare industry, I have heard they're starting to have some success with the drug she has just been approved for. As you can imagine, this brings our mother and our entire family hope.

As it stands right now, the only trial that our mom qualifies for has a price tag of $10,000 a month. She will take the drug until the positive results stop. I don't think the drug has been around long enough to know how long that could be and it doesn't actually matter because one extra day would be worth all of it to us. After insurance and financial supplements, her out of pocket cost is $2,400 per month. With the daily cost of living and her ability to work less and less on a regular basis, clearly this is an expense that is completely necessary but also comes at an excessive cost.

The impact that this cancer has had on my family has been overwhelming, to say the least. We, as a family, are working endlessly with the drug company, Pfizer, my mom's insurance company, and the American Cancer Society to find a way to help pay for this treatment. In the meantime, we have set up a fund to help raise money to assist us as we all pitch in to pay for this and any other possible treatments. This is not something that our mother would approve of, or want to be a part of, but as a group, my family has decided that sometimes it is ok to ask for help. We are all new to this idea of "fundraising" but like the saying goes, every bit helps.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our site and please know that we are entirely grateful for all the love and support we continue to receive.
