Our koalas need us NOW!

Koalas are a threatened species and predicted to become extinct by 2050, saving them is important and time-critical work!

Founded in 2016, Bangalow Koalas is a registered environmental organisation and charity / not-for-profit with DGR status (deductible gift recipient).

We exist to protect the endangered koala population across the northern rivers of NSW and our work involves large tree plantings. In three short years, we have planted 157,000 trees. The long-term project is to create a Koala Wildlife Corridor to encourage koalas out of urban areas and away from threats. The creation of habitat and the connection of fragmented sections of existing habitat will benefit and protect koalas and other wildlife.

The corridor aims to connect existing sections of koala habitat from Byron Bay and surrounds, westward to Tenterfield, north to the Queensland border and south towards Grafton.

In 2022 we are hoping to plant 80,000 trees and we need to raise the funds for 20,000 of those. The funding includes the purchasing, planting and maintaining of the trees over a three year period. Our work allows collaborations with local councils, Landcare groups, fellow community groups, Indigenous Rangers, Bush Regenerators, landholders and the local community. This is all working towards our goal of planting 500,000 trees by 2025.

Bangalow Koalas exists to educate, involve and inspire the community through tree plantings, educational workshops, advocacy and mentorship.

Our work has been recognised with the 2019 NSW Landcare Awards, Australian Community Media Landcare Community Group Award Champions, 2020 Australia Day Byron Shire Awards, Environmental Project of the Year 2020 and Byron Shire Council 2020 Sustainability Award.
