The most effective sustainable solutions for community problems ultimately come from within a community. Believing in this, Ann Prepare Lavni (APL) - Haitian creole meaning “let us prepare the future” - was established in the U.S. as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization https://annpreparelavni.org/
APL has served Banano, a small rural community near the southern coast of Haiti along the border with the Dominican Republic, for over 10 years. Banano is the only community in the area that has a river and spring water. With God’s help, and with the care and generosity of people like YOU, we have built a school that teaches English and basic knowledge to many Banano students.
Raphael, a native of Banano and APL’s onsite director, is a living example of how learning English opens many doors of opportunities. Today, Raphael uses that knowledge and God’s help to bring solutions that alleviate the crisis affecting his people. In 2014, with the support of many, we were able to start building a water system for Banano using a nearby spring to allow 2,500+ people access to clean drinking water.
“These changes exist in Banano because I understood the needs of my community and had a vision to help them live better”--Raphael said. “Instead of depending on donations to pay our teachers, Banano needs to own the school and water system by creating a Banano business that employs our graduates and provides funds to maintain and expand the water system and school,” Raphael concluded.
The primary means of earning for Haitians has been cutting trees, making charcoal from the wood, and selling the charcoal for cooking fuel. Consequently, the Haitian countryside is bare compared to the Dominican Republic just across the border. Charcoal income is not sufficient, so most Haitians survive and buy food and water from remittances of family members who immigrated to other countries.
Our vision is for Banano to have a business that produces bags and bottles of water to sell to others who need clean drinking water. The proposed name for this business is: BananEau Abba Spring Water – (using phonetics we combine the words Banano and Eau (which means water in French) to create one word: BANANEAU, which literally means ‘Banano Water’. This name will help people around Haiti learn about our community’s location. Furthermore, based on Mark 14:36 (“Abba, Father, everything is possible for you”) and by recognizing that this water comes from our father God, we included the word ABBA, which literally means ‘spring of water that comes from God our father’ as our slogan).
Income from the business will provide employment for some graduates and a funding stream for the community water business to maintain the water and school systems that we built, while investing in further community developments. The cost to start that water business is about $60,000. One donor has offered $10,000.
