Balaclava.Q Fundraiser - LGBTQ Art

Balaclava.Q is an international queer visual arts project and collective, part of an overall strategy to connect, promote and create platforms for LTGBTQ+ artists.  However, and more importantly Balaclava.Q provides a safe (and anonymous space -- to those who require it), to express their concerns as members of the queer community through art.   Established in 2016 www.balaclavadotq.net is a not for profit founded by Stiofan O'Ceallaigh  out of a desire to do something, as a direct reaction to the tragic event on June 12, 2016 at Pulse Nightclub, Orlando, Florida (USA), where 49 LGBTQ+ people were murdered and 53 others were wounded or seriously injured.  Since 2016 Balaclava.Q has grown in scale to be a truly global initiative, to date over 700+ plus artists and creatives from across six continents have taken part in the project.  Balaclava.Q has grown to provide  individual and group empowerment through community cohesiveness and celebration via three distinct strands (or tactics): TACTIC 1: Obscuring the face  - which allows artists the freedoms given through anonymity or covering the face to have their work shared and promoted globally without fear of local persecution by family, peers of local authorities.  Thanks to this tactic we have been able show works by artists who are banned in their own countries or who fear 'coming out' to their local communities.  Already at capacity we need your help to buy more online space so that we can continue to feature LGBTQ+ art and artists. TACTIC 2: HIVideo  - is a simultaneous global screening of newly commissioned art films to reduce fear and stigma around issues with HIV/AIDS.  In the past three years, and with the help of over 250+ international creative practitioners and venue partners we have facilitated screenings to sell out audiences in cities across the world on World AIDS Day in venues such as The Tom of Finland Foundation (Los Angeles, USA),  Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art, The Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (Bloemfontein, South Africa), Spallanzani Hospital (Rome, Italy),  Les Mots a la Bouche and La Mutiniere (Paris, France), Alexander Sauna (Athens, Greece), Big Bag Cinema and the Foyle Arts Centre (Northern Ireland), the University of Falmouth, Norwich University of the Arts, Penthouse NQ at The Powerhouse and Aire Place Studios (UK) - CLICK HERE  for the 2018 festival brochure. TACTIC 3: ABSTRACT ACTIVISM  where the very act of visibility IS activism).  Artists have contributed works which champion our community and our many nuances to love, and in loving.  Over 100+ artists have contributed work which loudly and proudly addresses queer concerns, issues and contexts via visual art. Also, with the help of our international team of volunteers and Creative Directors in 2017 we produced landmark exhibition 'HE - Questioning and Queering Masculinities ' (curated by the late Dr Robert Summers PhD and Stiofan O'Ceallaigh and supported by artist and gallerist Steve Glicken) to exhibit photography, sculpture, painting and film works at Last Projects Gallery, Los Angeles (USA), and in 2019 we will be joining forces with Athens annual queer arts festival Civil Disobedience  to create project titled 'BORDERS - What's up with that?' - an e-flashmob and exhibition that will take place on online and in Athens in 2020 (more information coming soon).  With over 35,000 views on our YouTube  channel and a combined 4,000+ followers on Facebook  and Instagram Balaclava.Q continues to grow from strength to strength.   HOW CAN YOU HELP WITH OUR PRIORITIES? Balaclava.Q is ideally seeking donations to help keep the project running smoothly for the next two years.  The main priorities we are hoping to tackle are as follows: CAPACITY: TACTIC 1 has already reached it's full capacity which means that no more artists can be added at the moment.  Also TACTIC 3  is nearing the same capacity level (72% of space used).  To be able to add more artists' contributions to our digital archive of queer contemporary art we need to purchase more space on Wordpress (£240 per year) and WIX (£180 per year) who are our main web providers (this also includes upgrading to premium memberships).  For this we need a combined £420 per year. DOMAINS: The Balaclava.Q domain name: www.balaclavadotq.net and subsidiary links (through internet provider GoDaddy), to the individual tactic websites requires an annual renewal fee £80. ...CONTINUING OUR GOOD WORK VIA HARDCOPY PRINT: For artists -- as a memento and for our archive -- we would like to produce an annual hardcopy print version of a catalogue to include work by all Balaclava.Q artists. It will also include academic writing on queer contemporary art.  This catalogue will fall under a new strand called TACTIC 4: Collaborations - as a kind of homage and/or acknowledgement to histrionic queer art initiatives, namely the queer zine.  As we reached our target on 11/12/2019 I decided to increase the target to make for a better quality publication with more content.  The new Balaclava.Q publication will be a collaboration with John Hopper publishing and due for release November 2020.    I will continue to increase the target until that time.  The more we raise > the more editions we can publish > the more content we can print! :-) . Thank you you to everyone who has been so generous so far. :-)
