Bailing Out, Family of 8 Flooded

Imagine going to bed one evening, it is raining after some recent snow events, you do not think much of this as it has happened before. You tuck in all 6 of the kids, making sure they are warm and will have sweet dreams. You wake up the following morning walk downstairs to the basement to do some laundry and realize you can only walk a few steps down - not because your legs don't work, because any further you will be submerged in water. This is exactly what two loving parents of six kids, dedicated members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kalamazoo, MI, experienced this about a week ago.
Jamin and Nicki Herold have dedicated their lives to their church, teaching and training others in the faith, doing anything they can to help others, raising 6 wonderful children ages 2 through 15. Their basement has been a source of great joy and utility for the family as it housed a game room, a guest room, a laundry, a bathroom, their furnace and water heater - the source of heat (in the winter of Michigan) and the source of hot water for all their bathing and food needs. All of this is now gone - the flood waters reached nearly 2 feet high in their basement and the insurance company will not cover any of it due to it being "flood" related.
How does this happen you might ask? Well, it is possible you may have heard on the news, or read about it online, or maybe even experienced the worst flooding conditions that have been experienced in Kalamazoo, MI since 1947. Not everyone was impacted but many that were impacted were not in flood zones, did not carry flood insurance, and as a result their insurance companies will not cover any of the damage ... solely because it was done by a flood and they did not have flood coverage - because they had no way to expect this event could even happen.
The flooding has receded and this family of 8 is fighting back as best they can, but they are in great need.
The floods have damaged their furnace, their hot water heater, their washer and dryer, framing / drywall / doors / the flooring have all been damaged beyond repair. They have lost furniture as well as other goods their family needs. They have been blessed with people willing to help and are getting back on their feet, but as a family dedicated to and working for the church, this is an extreme burden.
This family is not seeking handouts or trying to be greedy, they are willing to and have already started to do the hard work to recover themselves. They have begun tearing out all the damaged materials, taking down the drywall, throwing out all those things that are not salvageable, pulling up flooring, vacuuming out and drying out all the water. This family of 8 is prepared to do their own work to rebuild where they can, but will have to hire out the work that they cannot do - such as furnace and hot water heater replacement. They have received some help already, and are immensely grateful, but there is a lot of work yet to do.
We humbly ask for anything you can do to help. As Mother Theresa said, "we can do small things with great love," and that is all we ask, a little bit of help with great love. If you cannot donate, please say a prayer in support of this family. Any moneys that are collected over and above the need will go to Catholic Charities in Kalamazoo to assist other families in the area impacted by the floods.
